Martyn Announces 2 Masterclases this Summer!

Following the overwhelming response to Martyn’s recent social media posts regarding possible Masterclasses this Summer, he’s pleased to announce one in Cardiff on Saturday 27th July and another in Alton, Staffordshire on Saturday 17th August.

With twenty studio albums, thousands of shows under his belt, and a plethora of awards and plaudits, Martyn is very much on top of his game, and for 35 years he has been writing and performing his relevant and vital music across the globe. Although he has given songwriting workshops before, this will go much further. The day’s three sessions will explore songwriting, guitar technique and stage craft. There will also be an informal concert in the evening.

Songwriting

Martyn will talk about his philosophical approach to writing. Why he feels its so important to be able to take notes on our lives and how to bring those thoughts to the pen. An exploration of themes and ideas and how to find the entry point. He will share ideas on how to explore subject matter and how to write in a way that does the subject justice both for the listener and the artist. There will be opportunity to share ideas and hear any thoughts you have brought with you. And if you have nothing..how to find something. Plus much more..a journey into the heart of the matter and a ton of inspiration to send you off to write and create. There will be plenty of time for questions and interaction too and this applies to all the sessions.

Guitar technique

Over the years Martyn has developed his own unique Guitar style and sound. During this session he will work through some of the basics of his sound and technique, revealing how he creates that big and percussive sound, along with intimate textures. This will hopefully challenge participants to explore more of the instrument for themselves. Whilst some knowledge of the instrument will be helpful its not essential and this will be suitable for everyone no matter what ability you have. Martyn will also explain his ‘tech’ set up to explain how that helps shape the sound and vibe

Stagecraft skills

Martyn is renowned for his amazing stage presence and the ability to win over an audience no matter how big or small. He has had no end of plaudits from seasoned musicians, world famous artists and critics who have been stunned by his ability to create night after night a unique and transforming performance and experience. Through the years he has gathered a huge wealth of performing expertise and knowledge. In this session he will, for the first time, share some of that insight. How to interact with an audience, how to not give too much away. When to talk, when not to. How to get a decent sound. What to do when things go wrong! How to reach the back row as well as the front and make that connection that makes it feel like your audience is in your front room instead of a concert hall.

Evening concert

A concert to round off a great day together. Participants may want to share a song as part of the evening (though spots may be limited depending on how many) and of course Martyn will play..probably whatever you ask him to!The day will be an invaluable inspiration to long time musicians and writers or anyone just beginning a musical journey.Participants should feel free to bring their instruments with them, although this is not essential.Doors open at 10.45am, with the event starting at 11am, with a break for lunch and evening meal (Food not included), and will finish at approx 10.30pm.Tickets are £50 (plus small booking fee for online bookings) or £30 for Under 18’s and can be purchased by calling the office on 01524 840539 or online from
