The Real West Wing

Tonight I watched a number of programmes taped for me while I was away this summer. They consist of a few documentaries, sporting occasions and my favourite show of the moment ‘The West Wing’. The last instalment of the recent series was amazing and led me to the popular cliché of those who know the programme; wouldn’t it be great if President Bartlett were the ‘real’ President. To be honest, I would feel the world was in safer hands. It’s good to see the message board at the web site discussing the situation over military action against Iraq. There are a number of opinions being expressed there and its good to debate and throw these things around, I mean who would want to have to make these huge decisions? The truth is however, that someone does have to, and I can’t find anything to discern that president Bush is the man for the job. Today, as Iraq said it would allow UN inspectors back in (and I know Iraq has done this at the last moment on other occasions) and a little doubt is thrown as to whether Bush will get the support of the UN, he said the UN could either be an effective mechanism for peace and thus let him start a war, or show itself as an ineffective debating society. Nice line George, throwing your toys out the pram because the rest of the world wants to be sure, very sure, before they sanction the action the USA wants to take. What arrogance. I search but cant find much humanity in this guy, I don’t hear the rhetoric of compassion or humility that I, for one, wish from great leaders, including those who go to war.
